Main Task: Front Cover FINAL

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

One of these will be one of my subjects in my contents page. There will be an article about her
Because Lisa is the main attraction in my magazine, i will use 3 pictures of her. One for the front cover, another cropped version for my contents page, and a bigger one for my double spread
I originally planned to have Her as my Front Cover girl, but because the camera quality wasn't up to scratch, i had to retake them.
I had retaken the pictures, now i feel that with the position and posture, one of this images should be used as an exclusive article.

Main Task: Case Study of a Publishing House

Musicmags is a distribution program managed by the Music Magazine Publishers Association and distributed by Alfred Music Publishing. It supplies a a dozen leading music magazines to retailers in US and Canada. Musicmags publishes magazine that have specific genres. It does not write about dance music, but, instead it writes about rock.
Musicmags targets people who use or are interested in specific instruments like drums and guitars. BASS PLAYER is a prime example of what type of magazines Musicmags publish. There is no specific gender or age for these types of magazines, because anyone could like guitars, I assume it’s generally and older audience. It uses it uses clear, dominant colours and tones, such as white or blue for backgrounds and thick sans font that often contrast with the background colour so it stands out. It doesn’t use fancy text because I assume the editor wants the text to be readable.
Other magazines, such as ALTERNATIVE PRESS focus on more of a harder rock genre, and can attract a younger audience. AP uses dark backgrounds and Bright text as well as blocky text with unique fonts. This backs up this my theory. This magazines target audience, again, is not specifically open towards one gender so I assume it is more for the teanagers and young adults who call themselves Goth or Emo. The darker colour scheme shows more of a negative vibe of music that most people wouldn’t enjoy, thus the name “Alternative Press”.
The Target audience is different for most of the magazines Musicmags produces because if it were to be the same, then there would be no need to release more than one magazine. The company would lose a substantial amount of money. It is also good because this means that Musicmags can publish magazines to a wider audience, thus increasing there popularity. This makes the company look Diverse.
Musicmags is a member of the MMPA which is specially for publishing uses only.

Main task: Profiling Your Audience

The Magazine reader: Alen West, is an average teenager. He is 17 years old, and lives with his Mum and Dad in a public neighbourhood. As a teenager, Alen finds that most of his time is spent listening to music on his Mp3 player. He listens to quite a lot of genres, but he preferes dubstep. On average he listens to music at least 1 hour a day. He says that music is a big part of his life because he uses it to concentrate, relax, and even sleep. He says that different tracks have different feels. He generally, On weekends, when he is not in school, he is normally hanging out with his mates, wheather he is going to a party, or just playing games. Him and his friends try to keep up with the latest trends and fashions by watching music videos, and seeing what their favourite artists wear. They say that the music they listen have a direct impact on the clothes they wear. like some teenagers, Alen has a job, this means he can afford to spend money on the latest headphones or t-shirt which means he is rarely out of fashion with the rest of his friends. Alen not only listens to music, but he wants to know more about what it is like to be a musician, he likes to read about his favourite artists and see what goes on in their world. There is no real reason why Alen listens is into music so much. He describes it as a hobby. Like most teenagers, Alen has a lot of free time on his hands, so it would be ideal for him to enjoy doing what he likes best.

From this I know that I would need to involve multiple colours via ink/ paint splatter etc, rather than black and white. The Music Magazine would need to display information about Interviews with artists and musicians, because that is what the public wants. The public wants a stunning main image. The readers dont mind havine the magazine looking a bit messy, aslong as its a consistant style, rather than have it completely messy or extremely tidy. They want a good magazine for a cheap price. tha dont want to be bombarded by a multitude of pages. They dont really mind how often its released.

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

The Main Image/ Subject:

The main image is this main subject, in this matter, takes up one whole side of the page. It highlights one of the main issues or stories in the magazine. The colours used are Pink, with the shades, white and black. I believe the editor decided to use pink because it is a colour that hasn’t been used a lot for magazines. As well as being fresh and new, the colour pink is lighter than red, therefore more visible to see in a dark background. The text is blocky, striking people eyes as they view the text. This will be the first thing you will notice once you turn to the page. One thing that they have done, which I believe is a creative technique, is that they have coated only part of the text in pink, making it look like paint splatter. It makes the Text look less formal, and a bit more casual.

The Drop Down Letter:

The drop down letter is there to indicate the start of the text. It is about 3x the size of the regular text and is bold. The colour of the drop down letter is the same colour as the text columns, keeping consistency and being easy to see.

The Text Columns:

The Text columns are located on the right page and are presented neatly. Normally, the text columns have information about exclusive information or stories that are not normally in certain magazines. Often relating to the main image or other images on the double page spread. It is easy to see where a paragraph ends and where one starts, because the line of which one ends will be significantly shorter than others. This because if it were not, then it would be easy for readers to forget where they are.

The other images:

The other images are directly underneath the text columns and use identical scaling when compared to the text. This makes the double page spread look more organized. The images which contain people use either close ups or medium shots, that way, making it easier for people to see who they are suppose to be looking at. The images that have not people in them generally have a lot of white in them, making the text easier to read. The editor has done a fine job of making this double spread look professional as well as accessible for their target demographic.

The Title:

The title “typo sick” is not particularly done well. Not only is the text dull, but also, there is even smaller, blue text above it, which is hard to read. All the other content on the two pages really does draw attention away from the title; I believe this is the only let down on the double page spread.

Main Task: Front Cover Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Masthead:

The Masthead on this magazine is along the top of the magazine. It is the largest font on the front cover and stretches from left to right. The text itself is red and curvy. I believe the editor chose the colour red because it is the most attractive for the eyes to see. Also it stands out from a black background. The curvy text may connote that this is a fresh magazine, and could represent sound as never being flat, but flowing. The text is also a sans serif font and their for looks more available for a mass audience. The Masthead goes behind the main image, the editor wants the Masthead to draw you in, but not be over the top.

Selling Line:

The Selling line on this magazine is rather large and bold. Unlike the Masthead, the selling line uses blockish text, has its own shadow and is not plain red. I believe this was done so because, unlike most other magazines, this one, in particular, the editor wants the Selling line, to literally be what makes the viewer buy it. The text draws a lot of attention to it because of the font used, and the fact that it has its own shadow making people notice it even more. It uses colours that don’t stand out or conflict with the background, red and white. The editor chose the colour white because most of the shades of blue turn white. The reason he/ she chose red was because the Masthead is red. I feel that the Selling Line should have been less dramatic because it draws attention away from the Masthead.

Main Image:

The Main Image on this cover is a darkened figure wearing a helmet with neon lights raising one arm up (I assume to the beat) with smoke and lights behind him. In front of the camera are peoples hands, blurred. The photo is a focused shot from a low angle view, which connotes that the music and power is emitted from this DJs will, he controls the flow of this club. This is a good picture for the front cover of this magazine because it catches the essence of what this magazine is all about.

Main Cover-line

The main Cover-line in this magazine is a basically a miniature version of the Selling Line when it comes to font and colour scheme, I think it works well with this because it is the biggest, or most recent article in the magazine making it the main attraction. I think the different colours connote the specialities and uniqueness of each artist. The position of the Main cover-line gets a lot of attention, but gets in the way of the main image, which I, personally, am against.

Cover-line<

The cover-lines on this front cover aim to show some of the main features and articles in the magazine, they are tucked neatly into the either side of the front cover so they don’t get in the way of the image. I feel they have done this successfully. All the cover-lines have black boxes around them so the main image does not overshadow the text, making it easier for the viewer to read. They chose a completely different text from the main cover- line, making the text viewable at its small size. With the cover-lines, instead of making one part red and the other part white, they have one completely red and the other white, in that fashion. This makes the magazine look neat. I believe this works well.

Website Link & Dateline

The Website and Dateline are at the bottom of the cover next to the barcode. The website link is something all magazines have which shows the companies or publishers website. The dateline displays the month and year of which the magazine was released and normally has the price next to it. The text used for this is white and is bold, but is still hard to see. I believe the reason why it is presented like this is because if it was any bigger it would take away from the other text, and the website link and dateline are not the main focus of the magazine. I believe they chose white because if the text was red it would be harder to see at that size.

Main Task: introduction

Hello, I am Chago Bunton-Cole, Studing AS Media Studies at Christ The King Sixth Form College.

For AS media Preliminary Task we had to create a front page and contents mage for a new collage magazine, as you will be able to see.

Our Main task will be to create a front page, contents page and double page spread for a new music magazine.

I will be updating my blogger regularly over the course with my drafts and finals.

I have decided that the genre i will choose for this will be Dance and Dubstep, this is because Dubstep and dance is unique and generally unused

Preliminary Task: Textual Analysis

The character in this magazine is shown with a serious look on his face. The NVC (Non Verbal Commutication) makes the viewer think that Universities are most likely to have quite an intence environment. He is also shown looking straight at the person. He is not "beating around the bush".

Even though he is looking serious, the character has his hands in his pockets, this connotes that University could also be quite casual, this may conflict with the idea of seriousness. Maybe the fact that he had his hands in his pockets was also away to conseal what else University may have instore for new students, such as party life.

The main image is of the character shown wearing a black suite and tie, with a white shirt. The shirt is ironed and neat, with his top button done up; he also has his tie done up professionally too.

When someone looks at a suite, it normally connotes proffesionalism and importance, power- maybe even a sence of urgancy, but there is something odd about this picture; the character is wearing a pair of trainers.

This takes away from siriousness of this picture again and throws in the casual approach. the trainers are also white, this, i believe is to make them stand out from the rest of the picture.

The lighting in this picture is high-key shown coming in from the right hand side of the magazine cover. This makes the whole picture look more natural, but at the same time, the fact that its not coming straight from the centre may make the view think that University is not necesserally straight forward.

The most noticable piece of text on the cover is in the Masthead, the "University Link". This is coloured Pink, a colour that is pretty unique, because you dont really see alot of magazines that use Hot Pink for the main text. I believe the reason why they chose pink was because it connotes a sense of feminicity, something that the photo lacks. (a picture of a serious man in a suite doesnt really scream "this magazine is about women") This is because no University is magazine should appeal to one gender. Another reason why they chose pink, maybe, was because pink would be controversial; no one else really uses pink.

The text itself is pretty bold and blocky. This modernises the look of the magazine, which appeals to the young readers.

Preliminary Task: Movie poster Texual Analysis

Indiana Jones

in this discription i am ignoring all knowledge from the actual movie and going with only what i see.

From the look of this poster, the feel i get from in is a sense of exploring. This is mainly from the the character standing and facing the viewer(which just happens to be Indiana Jones. himself). The characters costume is an explorer hat, with tanned trousers and a brown shirt, with the sleeves rolled up. i think the fact that his sleeves are rolled up Connotes that he is ready to get his hands dirty, from either finding objects or fighting. The whip supports my theory. he is also standing infront of the path of light.

There are warm colours coming from the skull( im guessing the ctystal skull) which are in shades are yellow, gold, orange, red and white. the colour yellow connotes a subliminal message of "get me", which is why you are seeing lots of shades of yellow. you also see shades of gold which suggests that it is extremely valuble. These colours are used to draw the viewer's attention to the object. It is pretty obvious that the plot of the movie is based around this skull, hence the name, "Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull". The Fact that parts of the skull are hidden may drift to the possibility of a secret behind the skull or maybe a plot twist.

The background is greyish and has lots of, what looks like, ancient text, suggesting that maybe the movie takes place in ancient ruins, again suggesting that Indiana Jones is an explorer.

The text "kingdom of the cristal skull is in a digital clock styled text, which suggests that maybe there is a timeframe of which our hero must aquire this item. maybe said temple will collapse if he has not taken it in time.
